Chapter 20

Construct a New Home

July 12, 1965

Day after day he’d used a single shovel to scoop the dirt into buckets, then dump it with the other earth at the far back of the property where no one bothered to venture. Eventually, a thirty by forty-one by fifty-four–inch hole descended into the ground.

Dull stainless steel lined the ceiling, walls, and floor, with perfect soldered seams to prevent water leaking into the box. A twenty-by-twenty-inch steel-covered wooden trapdoor sealed the box and could be opened only by an outside handle. A home underground.

Who knew the gap between the dirt floor of a crawl space and the wood above could imitate a void between life and death. The bare metal is cool and soothing. Just like I would imagine a grave. Now, I need more light under here. The light is too dim. I’ve labored on this for so long. I can’t mess up now. This box makes a good home for her. But now I’ll always have to watch her. Can I do it? Do I cover her up with the blanket?

He sat inside the four steel walls cross-legged, coveting her. Each time she moaned, he opened the jar and smashed the rag over her face. It worked.

His warm hand rubbed her head. Rosie opened her eyes and her lips parted to speak, but she choked, and her eyes widened as a blanket enveloped her.

Weak and sleepy, Rosie struggled to discern the shadowy figure of the faceless person. And once again, the world went black.

Frequently, throughout the night, he peered into the door, smiling at his accomplishment.
